RICHMOND, Va.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) â The state has demonstrated no rational basis for refusing to allow strip clubs to serve mixed alcoholic drinks, a lawyer for three Virginia nightclubs told a federal appeals court Thursday.
J. Michael Murray, attorney for two Papermoon clubs in Richmond and one in Springfield, urged a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn state laws that authorize the sale of beer and wine, but not hard liquor, at establishments that feature entertainers clad only in g-strings and pasties.
Murray said the state has provided no evidence to support the notion that mixing distilled spirits with erotic performances leads to “adverse secondary effects” â most notably an increase in crime.
