Massa’s temporary successor will likely be decided in a special election called by Gov. David Paterson — if he can stick around long enough to formally declare the seat vacant and set a date. The governor has been mired in his own controversies, including an ugly and complicated domestic violence case involving a staffer, and Paterson’s apparently inappropriate solicitation of 2009 World Series tickets. (Can you believe that? Gubernatorial perks don’t include free tickets to the World Series when a home team plays? We really do need that People’s Constitutional Convention.)  
Paterson himself, lest we forget, is among our unelected representatives — unelected to the office in which he’s serving, anyway. He succeeded former Gov. Eliot Spitzer — another purveyor of salty language — who stepped down after a prostitution scandal. Paterson has since confirmed what we’ve always suspected about lieutenant governors: They’re nice guys who are wonderful at supporting the governor but would be in over their heads if elevated to the top post.
