Best actor in a play has five familiar names competing for the prize: Jude Law (“Hamlet”), Alfred Molina (“Red”), Liev Schreiber (“A View From the Bridge”), Christopher Walken (“A Behanding in Spokane”) and Denzel Washington (“Fences”).
There aren’t many smash-hit straight plays — usually the hot tickets are musicals — but seats to Washington and August Wilson’s “Fences” are the toughest in town. Tony often rewards such success, so “Fences” — about a father who’s jealous of his son’s opportunities — will do well in the play categories. We predict that it takes home awards for best revival; the best actor award for Washington, who plays the father; and best actress for Viola Davis, the mother. Director Kenny Leon will also emerge victorious.
Angela Lansbury has gone four-for-four when she’s been nominated for a musical, and wonderful as she is as a former courtesan turned grande dame in “A Little Night Music,” she won’t win as best featured actress in a musical.
