The whole-life tariff is normally imposed when a defendant has murdered two or more people, when the murders involved substantial planning, or if the killer also sexually offended.
Criminologist Professor David Wilson told Sky News: “This case draws to attention the fact that we have increasingly more prisoners serving indeterminate life sentences.
“The public need to be protected from this very violent perpetrator and it would be right to keep him in hospital until he comes to the end of his life.”
Gordon Brown said in February last year it was “very unlikely” Sutcliffe would ever be released.
Sutcliffe was dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper because he used a hammer, screwdriver and knife to mutilate his victims.
He said he believed he was on a “mission from God” to kill prostitutes.
