Only kidding—Matthew Weiner hasn’t taken a page from Dallas, but season four of Mad Men kicks off with a pretty radical shift in Don Draper’s character. We knew we were in for big changes at the end of the last season, which set us up for Betty and Don’s divorce and closed with the formation of the new Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. But we didn’t know that Don—an almost superhumanly good salesman in the past—could be so tone-deaf when it comes to selling his new company. Has separating from Betty changed him, or is he just out of his comfort zone? Maybe a bit of each? He endures withering criticism from Cooper and Sterling. He’s not as suave as he used to be with women (or at least isn’t with the Betty-bot Sterling throws at him). And it appears he just paid a prostitute to slap him around—on Thanksgiving, no less.
