Mississippi is still king of cellulite, but the study found an ominous tide is rolling toward the Medicare doctors in neighboring Alabama: obese baby boomers.
California’s adults ranked 41 out of 51 (including District of Columbia) in obesity rates, while the state’s children, aged 10 to 17, ranked 28.
Those rankings are nothing to celebrate, said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health.
“These levels are much too high,” he said. “There’s a lot that can and must be done.”
A similar county report found that nearly 23 percent of the county’s fifth-, seventh-, and ninth-graders are considered obese, though the rate has remained stable for the last few years.
Fielding called childhood obesity an epidemic that should get as much or more attention than
other recent health headlines, such as HIV scares in the adult entertainment industry.
