Eli, the protagonist played by Denzel Washington, is just walking west caring- SURPRISE- a Bible. Yes, the “book” of Eli is the “Good Book,” and is apparently the last King James edition left in existence. People shortly after the world’s nuclear holocaust blame religion for its misfortune and burn Holy Scripture en mass. Eli informs views, through dialogue, that he was guided to the book by a disembodied voice that commands him to travel west and find a suitable home for this literature.
The antagonist is Carnegie, played by Gary Oldman and perhaps named as a throwback to the baron of industry, runs a small town of survives from his brothel/hotel/bar with an iron fist. He is searching desperately, by proxy through his underlings, for the book. He says that with such a book he can “find the words” to make people do his bidding. The movie’s conflict is centered between Eli’s faith in finding a home for his albatross and Carnegie’s lust for power.
