House votes to ban welfare ATM debit cards at strip clubs

WASHINGTON, DC (WBTV) – The US House has voted overwhelmingly to ban welfare debit cards from being accessed inside various adult-themed stores, such as strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores.
The measure was approved late Wednesday by 395-27, with Republicans leading the way on the bill that they think will trim waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars, The Hill reported.
Democrats argued that the new rules demean folks who would need food at places that also sell liquor. The rules make ATMs off limits to the debit cards at the banned locations.

The bill got its start after the LA Times reported that more than $12,000 from aid programs was dispensed at California strip clubs from 2007 to 2009. Cash withdrawal fees in strip clubs typically are around $10, about 3 times more than usual.

The House also passed, by voice vote, a resolution that would cut House committee budgets by an average of 6 percent in 2012. That reduction, combined with a 5 percent cut last year, would produce savings of $28 million.
The House also voted 395-27 for a bill that would ban use of welfare money in gambling casinos, liquor stores and adult entertainment places such as strip clubs. The House passed a similar provision in December, but it never made it through the Senate.
Many states issue welfare recipients Electronic Benefits Transfer cards with cash benefits. The cards are supposed to assist families with basic needs, including food, shelter and clothing. The cards also provide a way of tracking where benefits are withdrawn, and that’s how states discovered the withdrawals at casinos, liquor stores and strip clubs.

It’s also the scene of one of Washington’s most infamous scandals from the 1970s when a US Representative found himself in hot water on the Tidal Basin’s shores after drink driving with a stripper in his car.

Mr. Falco cited a supermarket that will soon replace the 18th-century Admiral’s Row inside the Navy Yard, and the hundreds of residents who have already moved into the under-construction Navy Green development on Clermont Avenue. “We serve a lot of working people here, people from the neighborhood, even prospect heights. Business is good.”
Such changes mean that Mr. Shariati can charge a higher rent than J.J.’s was paying, making it welcoming only for an established chain. That said, some locals think that the right local business could compete at the site.
“The area is a growing creative class,” said area writer Franz Wisner, 45. “The creative class loves to support local businesses. A Dunkin’ Donuts wouldn’t add character.”
Not that Mr. Wisner or others are mourning J.J.’s, despite its cheap beer and strippers.

So Addictive Lounge: The white brick building across Spring Street from Jimmy’s where the So Addictive Lounge is located dates to the early 50s. An earlier frame structure on this site housed the McGuire grocery store in the 1920s and 30s, and then Prince’s Feed Store. The existing building originally was home to Arthur’s Department Store. For a number of years Simply Country, which featured an array of furniture, gifts, and handcrafted items, was located there. It served as office space for a few years before the current tenant opened its doors.
Stohlman Subaru: This building is the one constant in this section of Elden Street, having always been a car dealership (Ashwell’s and Paul Brothers preceded the current occupant)—although the town’s ABC store shared the west end of the building for many years.
Ice House Café: Despite what the name implies, there was never an ice house in this building or even on this site. Constructed in the 1950s, this was originally a drug store. There were several apartments and, for a while, a doctors office on the second floor. For a brief period in the 1960s the building housed Herndon’s very own claim to shame—The Pink Pussycat, a topless bar!

     WASHINGTON (CN) – Cops who broke up a bachelor party featuring “scantily clad” strippers “with money in their garters” and the smell of marijuana are liable for false arrest, a federal judge ruled.
     The group of revelers was arrested for unlawful entry and disorderly conduct at around 1:30 a.m. on March 15, 2008. D.C. Metropolitan Police had entered the house where the party was being held in response to a call about it.
     One of the officers, Andre Parker testified about having heard about “a lot of partying going on at” the supposedly vacant home. Once inside, Parker said he observed no furniture – just a mattress and lighted candles. He also observed “provocatively” dressed women and smelled of marijuana, but he neither found narcotics nor observed any illegal activity.
