Washington DC Adult Entertainment: This Week’s Burning Questions

Written on February 8, 2010 – 3:01 pm | by larrylibido

That question burst out into the open over the weekend as rumors rippled through the blogosphere that the Times was preparing a damaging article on New York Gov. David Paterson. One thinly sourced account claimed Paterson would resign today following publication of the article, much as Eliot Spitzer did nearly two years ago after the Times disclosed his involvement with a prostitution ring. The governor’s office vehemently denied that account — but the Associated Press is reporting that Paterson met over the weekend with Democratic leaders to discuss his “political future.” Paterson has suffered from anemically low approval ratings and some state Democrats want him to drop his plans for a re-election bid and allow popular state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to run in his place. Oh, and the Times article that started the scuttlebutt? It hasn’t run…yet.

Washington DC Adult Entertainment: `Empire Strikes Out’ shows baseball’s deep ties to US foreign policy, military …

Written on February 8, 2010 – 3:01 pm | by larrylibido

Baseball fans will love the martial anecdotes throughout the book. During the War of 1812, a game among American prisoners ended in tragedy when a long hit prompted players to enlarge a hole in a wall to retrieve the ball, and English authorities, thinking they were trying to escape, killed seven of them.
Union and Confederate soldiers tossed a ball back and forth across Civil War front lines. Lights the Chicago Cubs planned to erect at Wrigley Field for the 1942 season were donated to the war effort, helping ensure the team would not play night games there until 1988. And soldiers from the 116th Infantry Regiment Yankees won the “World Series” of U.S. European Theater Operations forces during World War II.
As the sport gained popularity, American firms organized teams overseas to discourage labor unrest and distract employees from vices like booze and prostitutes. Some places weren’t so opposed to “baseball colonization,” however, since the game evolved and flourished — even becoming part of the national identity in Cuba, Japan and the Dominican Republic.

Washington DC Strip Clubs: Strippers halt to cheer New Orleans Saints Super Bowl win

Written on February 8, 2010 – 2:39 am | by ginger

… Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints! Who dat? Who Dat!,” a crowd in a French Quarter restaurant chanted, after the team scored their first touchdown.
A city famous for diversions – Mardi Gras, music and colourful politics, to name a few – set aside distractions to focus on the big game.
Even the strippers on bawdy Bourbon Street stopped dancing. Instead, thousands of revellers cheered the Saints on live television sets at nearby bars.
“We have no music, no stages. It’s the first time I’ve seen a club shut down and I’ve been doing this for five years,” said Sam Stonebraker, 34, a host at Rick’s Cabaret, a gentleman’s club. “The game is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime event in this city.”
On a typical night, the club has 40 “entertainers” dancing on stage – not tonight.
A few doors down, the Temptations strip club was also upstaged by the Saints Super Bowl.

Aymond: Boring week will finish with huge bang in Miami

FT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Super Bowl XLIV shouldn’t have a hard time matching the week-long hype.
With the exception of New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ “remember-me” shots comment aimed at Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the week leading up to tonight’s big showdown has been pretty tame.
There’s been no reports of curfews missed.
There’s been no players getting arrested at strip clubs.
There’s been no word of brawls breaking out at Super Bowl parties in South Beach.
As a reporter for a Thailand newspaper put it on Thursday, “This has been a pretty boring Super Bowl week.”
The story lines are quite compelling.
Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning; No. 1 vs. No. 1; Archie’s team vs. Archie’s son.

Washington DC Adult Entertainment: Populist Constitutionalism and the Tea Party

Written on February 7, 2010 – 2:13 pm | by larrylibido

The Tea Party movement is not a one-issue (one-hit) wonder — like prohibition. Nor is it a bunch of political zombies mesmerized by some charismatic leader like an Edwards, a Wallace, or a Perot.
The Tea Party does not need a charismatic leader. It is, essentially, an ongoing educational process — that will be heard (one way or another) by tone deaf and constitutionally ignorant politicians. The Tea Party teaches a multitude of Americans what they are no longer (or “rarely,” I suppose I should write) taught in our public schools and universities: America was, from the beginning, intended to be a grand experiment in freedom and local and state control.
Take Nevada and Utah as instances. The states border each other. Yet one state endorses legalized gambling, prostitution, and easy access to liquor. Right next door, teetotaling Utah frowns on all of these “immoral” practices.

Washington DC Adult Entertainment: Illinois Democrats no cure for what ails Obama

Written on February 6, 2010 – 1:01 am | by larrylibido

Giannoulias, 33, serves as state treasurer. Republicans are spotlighting the soured real estate portfolio at the Giannoulias family’s Broadway Bank, including loans to Michael “Jaws” Giorango, a convicted prostitution ring operator.
Broadway Bank was recently ordered by government regulators to raise additional capital — after Giannoulias received his share of $70 million in proceeds following his father’s death.
Giannoulias is trailing Kirk 46 percent to 40 percent in the latest opinion poll ahead of their November showdown.
The loss of the Illinois Senate race would represent a serious setback for Democrats. Losing control of either the Senate or House of Representatives could undermine Obama’s ability to get key legislative initiatives approved.

Cohen said a 2005 domestic abuse accusation that he held a knife to the throat of his then-girlfriend was untrue. The charge was dropped when the woman, an accused prostitute who Cohen said was his masseuse, did not show up in court.

Washington DC Adult Entertainment: BAE to Pay US $400 Million for False Statements

Written on February 6, 2010 – 1:01 am | by larrylibido

… They’ve put the bribery allegations behind them in both the UK and the U.S., wrapping this up without the uncertainty, expense and reputational damage of a trial and without admissions that could lead to debarment, she said. “I expect they’re pleased. This seems a very ‘business-friendly’ end to some very egregious allegations.”
Allegations of corruption have swirled around BAE for years. In 2003, The Guardian reported that company’s chairman, Sir Richard Evans, may have been complicit in operating a $40 million slush fund used to bribe government officials in Saudi Arabia, among other places. The slush fund turned out to be considerably larger.
Over 15 years the defense firm allegedly provided Saudi royals with cash, cars, prostitutes and houses among other things in exchange for lucrative defense contracts. The most infamous of these dealings was the so-called al-Yamamah deal that Margret Thatcher negotiated with Prince Bandar, the son of the Saudi defense minister, in the 1980s.
